  • Course Overview

    This course prepares you for entry into the telecommunications industry and convergent technologies, including radio, optical, data and internet protocol (IP) networks. The course is suitable for trades workers or skilled labourers who are seeking to extend their current skill base to include telecommunications, or those who may be already working as a technical support person in the industry and require the formal training to meet licencing or regulatory requirements.

    This course has been designed to enable you to apply for one or more of the cabling endorsements with ACMA (www.acma.gov.au), including Coaxial Cabling Endorsement, Structured Cabling Endorsement, Optical Fibre Endorsement, and/or Open Cabling Endorsement.

  • Course Structure

    This course is delivered through a combination of theoretical learning, practical demonstration and hands-on activities on campus. 

    Topics include:

    • Industry code of practice, licences, regulations and standards
    • Structured, optical and coaxial cabling and components
    • Fibre characteristics and performance
    • Installations and termination
    • Maintenance of optical fibre cabling systems
    • Field testing techniques, fault finding
    • Compliance and documentation.

    Assessment

    Assessment may be a combination of written and online assignments, tests, examinations and practical application projects.

  • Requirements

    Recognition of prior learning

    You may be able to shorten the length of your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen.     This course provides the requirements of registration for installation and maintenance of structured cabling, optical fibre cable and coaxial cabling.

    At Holmesglen, we're all about hands on learning, so our fabrication workshops are equipped with industry standard machinery. Our continued investment in equipment means that you learn on the equipment you will find on the job, so when you finish your studies you are work safe and work ready.

    Visit us on Open Days at 5.00pm and talk to our teachers about a career in Engineering. You will be shown around our workshop and possibly having a try at designing something with our computer controlled plasma machine that you can take home. After the tour our teaching staff will be available to answer any further questions about the courses and the industry.

    You can also come along to find out more about our VET in Schools course, the Certificate II in Engineering Studies. Our experienced teachers will provide you with information on how we can support you to successfully complete units towards your Year 11 and Year 12 studies as well as highlight future study pathways and career opportunities.
