  • Course Overview

    This full-time course is designed for first timers to the telecommunications industry, and will help you pathway into work on the National Broadband Network (NBN) as well as gain valuable insight on the infrastructure utilised in both the carrier and customer sides of the network.

    Your training will take place at our state of the art facilities located at our Arden Street, North Melbourne campus.

    During this course, you will learn about a range of competencies in a varied work context, from installation to the operation of telecommunications products and equipment. Through real, practical learning, you will develop broad-based employability skills in a range of telecommunications fields, focusing on delivering services to the customer premises and from the carrier lead-in. This qualification will give you competitive advantages to enter the industry sooner.

    At the completion of this course, you will be able to pursue a variety of entry level roles such as Telecommunications Network Customer Services Technician.

    On successful completion, students will gain the competencies required for the Restricted Registration (ACMA) and Construction / Induction (White Card).

  • Course Structure

    This course is delivered through a combination of theoretical learning, practical demonstration and hands-on activities on campus. 

    Topics include:

    • Industry code of practice, licences, regulations and standards
    • Construction Industry Occupational Health Safety
    • Coaxial cabling
    • Aerial cabling
    • Fibre characteristics and performance
    • Installations and termination
    • Cabling components, systems and maintenance
    • Field testing techniques, fault finding
    • Compliance and documentation.


    Assessment may be a combination of written and online assignments, tests, examinations and practical application projects.

    Recognition of prior learning

    You may be able to shorten the length of your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen.     There are no formal prerequisites for this course.

    Qualification & Recognition

    After successful completion of this course you will be eligible to receive the ICT20215 Certificate II in Telecommunications Network Operate and Build.


    At the completion of this course, you will be able to pursue a variety of entry level roles such as Telecommunications Network Customer Services Technician, or you may wish to apply for credit and continue your studies in the ICT30415 Certificate III in Telecommunications Network Operate and Build or other Certificate III Telecommunications courses.

    Career Opportunities

    This course also provides the requirements for the Construction / Induction (White Card) and the Restricted Registration (ACMA).
